Route from North of Exeter on the M5 Motorway through Devon

Drive southwards along the M5 Motorway.   After passing exits towards the City of Exeter, move to the right so as NOT to go left onto the A376 to Exmouth.   From that point, follow the instructions given below for "Route from East of Exeter".

Route from East of Exeter on the A303 trunk road through Devon

From the A303 trunk road, turn off left onto the M5 MOTORWAY, SOUTH, towards PLYMOUTH, OKEHAMPTON and BODMIN. When then on the M5, move to the right so as NOT to go left onto the A376 to Exmouth. Continue along the M5 and then take the A30 trunk road westward towards OKEHAMPTON and BODMIN.

Continue your journey along the A30.

DO NOT take the turning on the left into Okehampton, but instead go on somewhat farther and take the A386 road on the left towards TAVISTOCK and PLYMOUTH.
There is no further way off the A30 for about 20 miles (32 km), and so you should make very sure that you do not miss that turn onto the A386.

About five miles (8 km) along the A386, after passing the signpost to Bridestowe and very considerably before Tavistock, look for the DARTMOOR INN on the left-hand side, and, a few metres before that, immediately after a former petrol station and shop on the right, turn sharply RIGHT into a smaller road marked towards LYDFORD GORGE, leading down, in about one mile (1.5 km), to the centre of the Village of LYDFORD.

Route from North and Central Cornwall

From the A30 trunk road going eastwards towards OKEHAMPTON and EXETER, take the A386 road
towards TAVISTOCK and PLYMOUTH.

About five miles (8 km) along the A386, after passing the signpost to Bridestowe and very considerably before Tavistock, look for the DARTMOOR INN on the left-hand side, and, a few metres before that and immediately after a former petrol station and shop on the right, turn sharply RIGHT into a smaller road marked towards LYDFORD GORGE, leading down, in about one mile (2 km), to the centre of the Village of LYDFORD.

Route from South Cornwall, Plymouth and Tavistock

From Tavistock take the main road towards OKEHAMPTON, ie the A386.

About six miles (10 km) along the A386, and well before Okehampton, look for the DARTMOOR INN on the right-hand side, and, opposite that and immediatelybefore a former petrol station and shop on the left, turn sharply LEFT into a smaller road marked towards LYDFORD Gorge, leading down in about on mile (1.5 km), to the centre of the village of Lydford.

Travelling by Bus

There is a very good bus service to Lydford from Okehampton and from Tavistock.   A bus runs in each direction approximately every hour of day-time throughout the year, including on Sundays; the journey from Okehampton to Lydford takes about twenty minutes, and that from Tavistock to Lydford journey about 30 minutes.

The Okehampton to Lydford route goes through the village of Sourton, where there is an interesting Roman milestone. The route from Tavistock goes through the villages of Mary Tavy and Brentor, and on the way passes over a beautiful stretch of Dartmoor from which there is a fine view of the twelth-century Brentor Church of St Michael de Rupe (St Michael of the Rock) on its high peak. Lydford Castle and Lydford Church are within the orginal Anglo-Saxon , central area of Lydford Village, and the Waterfall and the Devil's Cauldron entrances to Lydford Gorge are south of the centre of the Village.
